This is the first rock musical (it is sometimes called a rock opera) to feature a sound similar to Talking Heads or Talking Heads' Beyond the Pale successor, Big River. In the second track, the participants of the ritual ''Hellendoorn'' dance, referred to as meat puppets, go to Hell and the human souls, the devils who have tormented their owners for the past centuries, go along with them, having achieved their freedom. In the course of the ritual, the souls band together in harmony, and soon a good society is one again. The song ends with a great dance interlude, in which the full weight of the song is best realized. The only song in the entire musical where the male vocals, sung by two male voices, play the lead part. Another interesting concept for a singer like David Byrne - and others of his generation - is that, unlike the music of 1965, the soundtrack in Hellendorf (1972) is less about a story, than a series of moods, similar to the 'psychedelic city' themes of the era. Yet the appeal of Hellendoorn is most certainly down to the concept tracks alone (except for 'Long Desert Highway', which is a non concept song, a song about a caravan-commuter who feels afraid while traveling, which is very similar in structure to 'Can't Find My Way Home' by The Byrds.) It's also fascinating to hear the songs performed by the cast - and in such a style - on stage.
If you’re of a certain age, you simply know and love shiny things, and it was for us. But River Deep, Mountain High is hardly going to be the lens through which you view the rest of your life. So we’re going to segue into another concept of ours, the one that set us on this track, the one that has 11 years of happy surprises behind it. Our concept is psychedelic, more specifically "digital kaleidoscopic".
Now a royal conspiracy is about to unfold in the most corrupt city in the world. A carefully orchestrated series of murders that began with the overthrow of an idealistic young king will end with the death of an orphaned girl and the ruin of everything that Falcio, Kest, and Brasti have fought for. But if the trio want to foil the conspiracy, save the girl, and reunite the Greatcoats, they'll have to do it with nothing but the tattered coats on their backs and the swords in their hands, because these days every noble is a tyrant, every knight is a thug, and the only thing you can really trust is a traitor's blade. d2c66b5586
