In Gurmukhi, Hindi is the most commonly used language for writing. It is similar to Gujarati and Urdu. Punjabi, Rajasthani and Sindhi also share a lot in common with it, albeit with a strong and different accent. Hindi comes from the old Sanskrit language. Hence, it shares a lot of vocabulary and tradition with Sanskrit and there is also a large amount of Sanskrit loan-words in modern Hindi. It was first brought to Punjab during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Today, it has a virtual monopoly over Punjabi and is the second most common language in the Indian subcontinent. The parallelism between the Punjabi and the Hindi languages lies mainly in their alphabet. Hindi uses the Devanagari script, while Punjabi uses the Shahmukhi script. Hindi and other Indo-Aryan languages are spoken natively by more than 560 million people, who form the bulk of the population of India.
