Pandoc is a tool that will convert your Word document into many different ebook formats. Some of the output formats include: EPUB (the de facto ebook format), HTML, PDF, MOBI (the Kindle format), and LIT (a format that is used by Barnes and Noble).
You want to write books, not Word documents. Why? Well, I think first and foremost a book is a printed document. You write it in a word processor, but it doesn’t matter too much what you wrote in there, you want to print it and bind it into a book. You can then distribute your printed book to friends, family, or sell it to Amazon.
If you want to use your existing book as the basis of your ebook, Word is the way to go. But you can also write your content in a word processor and publish your book in a variety of other formats.
Microsoft Word is one of the most popular word processing programs, primarily because of its ease of use. It is easy to manage, easy to customize, and you can create entire books with it. But it is also not a good format for publishing.
Pandoc will typically use your HTML heading levels to create the chapters and outline for your book. Level 1 headings will become chapters. Pandoc can then create you a table of contents for the epub, displaying your tree as deep as you like. This means that you need to make sure that your document is well structured in your HTML or Markdown.
I import the book to Scrivener on both computers. I then edit the book on both computers. I export the book to my Dropbox. Then I import the book on my personal computer. As above, I export the book from Scrivener to my Dropbox. Finally, I import the book to the work computer.
My problem was twofold. First, I had the book set to be a web book. This meant that Scrivener didn’t work well with Dropbox. It was just exporting the book to the Dropbox. So I spent several days getting the book set to a normal book with only print options set.
I export the book files to Dropbox. When I need to work on the book on my personal computer, I just import it. As you can see, I drag the book file from my Dropbox to the Scrivener file in my Dropbox. If I need to work on the book from the work computer, I drag the book file from my work Dropbox to the Scrivener file in the Dropbox on my personal computer. If I need to import the file on the personal computer, I drag the file from my personal Dropbox to the Scrivener file on the work computer. No conversions needed.
This system is great. It saves me a lot of time and stress. I can write an hour on the personal computer, export to Dropbox, write another hour on the work computer, and so on. Then I can import the changes to the PC and the changes to the Mac. I have only to backup once, and then the rest is seamless. This system is great, but it was of no help to me for a while, because there was no way to get the Dropbox to sync with the Scrivener. I could export and import, but there was no way to get the Scrivener to see the changes. 827ec27edc
